6 OF DIAMONDS

Pick of the Week

Each week, we pick a playing card at random and let its associations guide our thoughts on play.

This week’s pick: the 6 of Diamonds.

The diamond is cleanly associated with value. The 6 represents balance. Paired with the diamond, the 6 suggests the flow of give-and-take, as opposed to fixed financial value (like, a diamond ring) as value isn't just material. It's also the principles we hold and the ways we want to be treated by others.

So how do you balance the act of giving and receiving in alignment with your values? Are you giving your time, energy, or attention to what you actually care about—or to what you think you should care about? And when someone gives to you, do you receive it as care, or just attention?

Being wanted is not the same as being valued. Being wanted can feel like someone desires your body or your company—but on their terms. Being valued means someone sees what matters to you and honors it. That's true reciprocity—not just "I give, you give," but "I see what you care about, I'll meet you there."

Play can't happen when you're overextended or underasking. If you're giving beyond what feels aligned, you're not playing—you're performing. And if you're not receiving what you need, you're not playing—you're enduring. The 6 of Diamonds helps us understand that play thrives in equilibrium; when you give from a place of alignment and receive without guilt, that's when play becomes possible.
