THE 5 OF HEARTS

Pick of the Week

Each week, we pick a playing card at random and let its associations guide our thoughts on play.

This week’s pick: the 5 of Hearts

We're taught to fear instability and avoid change because, well… it's uncomfortable. But the 5 says disruption is growth. The Heart speaks to feelings that arise when disruption inevitably comes—representing not just our emotions, but how we experience and express them.

The question the 5 of Hearts asks is: how can we feel better within the disruption that is necessary for growth?

The answer is play.

But there’s a twist! Play is both the disruption and the remedy.

In a world overrun by schedules and tasks, play is itself disruptive. It interrupts productivity, demanding we step away from what’s expected and measured. That’s uncomfortable.

But here’s the thing: discomfort is also where we already live when things falls apart. Plans collapse, relationships end, and the stability we’ve built reveals itself as fragile. We're already in the mess. But what if the way through isn't to claw back to solid ground, but to lean in? To get messier—not chaotic, but intentionally unstable—in order to find humor, lightness and perspective when the weight of being alive gets inevitably heavy?

What if the way through disruption is more disruption?

Growth comes from understanding our emotional patterns—how we respond when things get hard, what we reach for when we're scared. When we understand that those patterns no longer serve us—such as the need to control or the impulse to perform stability—play is what breaks these cycles, inviting us to step away from what we're used to.

It’s a remedy because it refuses to restore what wasn’t working in the first place.

So, while it might feel like a means without an end, the 5 of Hearts remind us that play is exactly what we need in order to make it through—and it’s a tool we should all activate for greater growth.
